THE FIND
A polished marble stone egg — gray-white ground with bold black veining distributed across a smooth, high-polish surface. Dense and opaque, with a graphic quality to the veining that reads differently from every angle. An egg form that suits the material: the weight feels intentional in the hand. Photographed on a brass display stand (stand not included).

WHAT WE KNOW
This specimen is presented as marble based on its visual characteristics — the dense, opaque gray-white surface with bold black veining is consistent with metamorphosed limestone (marble) rather than alabaster (gypsum), which is typically semi-translucent and rarely produces this style of bold black veining. Marble forms when limestone or dolostone is subjected to heat and pressure during metamorphism, recrystallizing the calcium carbonate into interlocking calcite or dolomite crystals. The black veining is typically graphite, pyroxene, or other mineral inclusions distributed through the marble during metamorphism. Material identification based on appearance; not independently laboratory verified. Weight not confirmed — please weigh and update before publishing.

THE STORY
The veining pattern in marble is a record of the original limestone’s history — impurities and mineral bands present in the sedimentary rock are reorganized and sometimes concentrated by the heat and pressure of metamorphism. Black veining in particular tends to be graphite, which is itself metamorphosed carbon from ancient organic material. The dark lines running through this egg are the compressed remnants of ancient life, transformed beyond recognition by geological time and pressure into the graphic pattern visible on the surface.

WHY WE CHOSE IT
The veining is bold and well-distributed — the contrast between gray-white ground and black veining is strong and graphic. The polished surface brings forward the pattern clearly. A composed, architectural piece that suits a curated shelf or desk without demanding attention the way more colorful specimens do.
