WHAT WE KNOW
Rhodonite is a manganese inosilicate mineral (MnSiO₃) that forms in metamorphic and metasomatic environments, typically in manganese-rich rock sequences. Its characteristic pink to rose-red color is produced by manganese in the crystal structure. The black veining and patches visible in rhodonite specimens are manganese oxide minerals — primarily pyrolusite or romanechite — that form as secondary alteration products when the manganese in the rhodonite oxidizes at or near the surface. The black is, in other words, the same element as the pink, in a different oxidation state. THE STORY
The pink and black pattern in rhodonite is a record of two different chemical states of manganese coexisting in the same stone — the reduced manganese silicate (pink) alongside the oxidized manganese oxide (black). The boundary between them marks where oxidizing groundwater reached the rhodonite over geological time, converting the outermost manganese silicate to oxide. In a polished piece, those oxidation fronts become the graphic black veining that makes rhodonite immediately recognizable. The pattern is chemistry made visible.
