THE FIND
A purple fluorite tower point — polished and shaped from natural fluorite with violet coloration that shifts character as the light moves across it. Purple tones can appear soft and translucent or deep and saturated depending on illumination and viewing angle. The tower form is human-made; the color, internal structure, and mineral character are natural features of the fluorite. A simple display piece that retains the geology of the material it was shaped from.
WHAT WE KNOW
Fluorite (CaF₂) is a calcium fluoride mineral that crystallizes in the cubic system and occurs in one of the widest color ranges of any mineral — colorless, green, purple, blue, yellow, pink, and multicolored. Purple fluorite derives its color from color centers: lattice defects caused by natural radiation exposure that absorb visible light in the yellow-green range, producing the complementary violet-purple color perceived by the eye. The same mechanism produces blue John fluorite and many blue and violet fluorite varieties. Fluorite is soft (Mohs 4) with perfect octahedral cleavage in four directions — polished fluorite objects must be handled with care, as the cleavage means the material can chip or cleave along internal planes if dropped or struck. Fluorite is also the mineral that gave science the word “fluorescence” — many specimens glow a distinctive blue-violet under shortwave UV light, a property first systematically described and named after fluorite by George Gabriel Stokes in 1852. THE STORY

The polishing reveals it; the radiation created it. The tower shape is a contemporary form applied to an ancient material. That combination — a mineral whose color is the record of geological irradiation, shaped into a simple geometric form — is what makes polished fluorite specimens both accessible and genuinely interesting.
