THE FIND
A polished goniatite fossil, 9g — an ancient ocean spiral carried forward through stone. Small enough to sit in your palm; its story reaches back into a world almost impossible to imagine. The creature disappeared. The shape did not.

WHAT WE KNOW
Goniatites were extinct ammonoid cephalopods — relatives of the better-known ammonites — that lived in marine environments from the Devonian through the Permian periods (approximately 419 to 252 million years ago). Like ammonites, they had coiled, chambered shells; the chambers were connected by a tube called the siphuncle, which the animal used to regulate buoyancy by adjusting gas and fluid ratios. The suture pattern where each chamber wall meets the outer shell is distinctive in goniatites — simpler and more angular than the complex fractal-like sutures of true ammonites — and is visible when specimens are cut and polished. Polishing reveals the internal chamber geometry that creates the geometric pattern visible on this specimen. THE STORY
