THE FIND
A polished agate geode slice, 240g — cream and warm tan agate banding on the outer ring, large druzy quartz crystal interior radiating from the center. From a distance, it is simply a slice of stone. Hold it toward a light source and the interior glows: agate chalcedony is semi-translucent, and a thin slice transmits light through the banding in a way that no other display format for this material can match. The druzy center catches the light with hundreds of tiny crystalline faces. The photo shows this effect directly — that is not an editing artifact, that is the material. Display near a window or backlit on a stand for full effect. Stand shown in photographs — please confirm whether stand is included.

WHAT WE KNOW
Agate is a variety of banded chalcedony — microcrystalline quartz (SiO₂) — in which silica-rich hydrothermal fluids deposit successive concentric layers on the interior walls of a rock cavity. Each band represents a depositional period; the layering is an analog record of changing fluid chemistry and temperature over geological time. The semi-translucency of agate (chalcedony transmits light better than coarser quartz because the microcrystalline grain size is below the wavelength of visible light, reducing scattering) is what makes polished slices distinctively beautiful when backlit — the banding becomes luminous rather than simply patterned. The druzy interior is the final stage of the geode’s development: after the agate layers filled most of the cavity, the remaining void was too small to support further chalcedony deposition, and quartz crystals grew inward from the agate surface instead, producing the fine sparkle visible in the center. The exact geological locality of this specimen has not been independently verified. This specimen weighs 240g.

THE STORY
Layers trace the slow deposition of mineral material — each band a record of one phase of the geode’s formation, laid down from the outside in. The druzy center is the last chapter: the moment when the cavity ran out of room for banded growth and switched to crystal formation instead. The polished face is a cross-section through all of it — a window into the slow work of stone. The photograph shows the slice backlit, because that is the correct way to look at it. The stone was built to transmit light. Place it where light can reach it.

WHY WE CHOSE IT
The photography says it — the backlit translucency of this slice is exceptional and the druzy center creates genuine sparkle within the glowing agate. At 240g it has display presence. Only 3 images in the current listing; additional angles from the front face and close-up of the druzy center would strengthen the listing before publishing. A strong window-display or light-table piece at $65.
