THE FIND
A polished petrified wood worry stone, 33g — ancient timber mineralized into silica, shaped and smoothed into a thumb-friendly form. Warm browns, muted reds, and stone grays with the original wood grain preserved beneath the polish. A tactile connection to deep time.

WHAT WE KNOW
Petrified wood forms through permineralization: buried timber is gradually replaced by silica-rich groundwater, with quartz or chalcedony preserving the original cellular structure — grain, growth rings, and sometimes bark texture — in stone. This specimen has been shaped and polished into a worry stone form: smooth, palm-sized, with a thumb groove suited to handling. The earth-tone coloration reflects the trace minerals present during fossilization. Weight: 33g. Locality not independently verified.

THE STORY
A worry stone made from petrified wood is a specific kind of object — it combines the tactile function of a handheld touchstone with the geological fact of a fossil. Running a thumb across the polished surface, you’re touching something that was once a living tree, then buried, then slowly replaced atom by atom with mineral over millions of years, then shaped by human hands into something meant to be held. That’s a long chain of transformation for a small object.

WHY WE CHOSE IT
The polish on this piece is smooth and even, and the wood grain is still legible through the finish. At 33g it sits well in the hand. A strong gift piece or a personal carry for anyone drawn to natural history objects.
