WHAT WE KNOW
Petrified wood forms when woody material is buried and protected from ordinary decomposition while mineral-rich groundwater moves slowly through the surrounding sediment. Over geological time, minerals (commonly silica, calcite, or pyrite, depending on the conditions) precipitate into the cellular spaces of the wood, gradually replacing and preserving the organic structure as stone. The process can preserve the grain pattern, annual rings, and cellular geometry of the original wood with remarkable fidelity — the result is stone that still carries the visual language of wood.
