WHAT WE KNOW
Amethyst cathedral geodes form in basaltic lava cavities in volcanic regions — the majority of the world’s supply originates from the Rio Grande do Sul region of southern Brazil and the Artigas region of Uruguay. Silica-rich hydrothermal fluids enter the cavity and deposit successive layers of chalcedony on the walls, followed by amethyst crystals growing inward. The deep violet color is produced by trace iron and natural irradiation during crystal growth. The "cathedral" form refers to freestanding geodes cut with a flat base so they stand upright, displaying the crystal interior. Amethyst color can fade with prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. THE STORY
The basaltic lava flow that formed this geode’s outer shell predates the crystals inside by a significant margin — the cavity formed when gas bubbles were trapped in cooling lava, and the amethyst grew later, when hydrothermal fluids worked their way through the rock. The polished base is a lapidary decision that turns a geological object into a display piece: it creates a stable, self-standing form that shows the crystal interior at its best. The dark matrix around the crystal pocket is the original basalt — the rock that held the space open long enough for the amethyst to form.
