THE FIND
A polished hematite specimen, 30g — dark silver to gunmetal black, mirror-like surface, heavy in the hand. The kind of stone that reads less like a crystal and more like a relic of metal and earth meeting in stillness.

WHAT WE KNOW
Hematite is an iron oxide mineral (Fe₂O₃) and one of the most abundant iron-bearing minerals on Earth. When polished, it takes on a smooth, highly reflective surface — cool to the touch, dense, with a metallic luster that ranges from dark silver to gunmetal black. Despite its industrial appearance, hematite forms through entirely natural geological processes including sedimentary deposition, hydrothermal activity, and volcanic processes. This specimen weighs 30g. Locality not independently verified.

THE STORY
Hematite has been used by humans for tens of thousands of years — as pigment (red ochre is powdered hematite), as a polishing abide, and as an ornamental stone. Its name derives from the Greek word for blood, a reference to the red streak it leaves when scratched across an unglazed surface — a striking contrast to its silver-black polished exterior. In a mineral collection, hematite brings contrast: where quartz and agate feel luminous and soft, hematite feels anchored, dense, and modern.

WHY WE CHOSE IT
The mirror finish on this specimen is exceptional — the surface reflects surroundings in a soft blur that gives it a quiet, almost armor-like presence. It photographs well and holds its own on any shelf or desk.
