WHAT WE KNOW
Fluorite (calcium fluoride, CaF₂) grows in cubic and octahedral crystal habits in hydrothermal vein deposits. Blue fluorite develops its color from trace impurities and lattice defects during crystal growth — the deeper indigo and midnight blue tones of “blueberry” fluorite represent a more concentrated expression of the same coloration mechanism. THE STORY
Fluorite is the mineral that gave fluorescence its name — many specimens glow under ultraviolet light, a property first described in fluorite and named after it. Blue fluorite in particular often shows strong fluorescence, sometimes shifting to a vivid blue-violet under UV. The “blueberry” trade name is informal but accurate — the color saturation in the best specimens genuinely resembles the deep blue-purple of ripe fruit, which is unusual in the mineral world where blue coloration is relatively rare.
