THE FIND
A polished stone egg, 148g — deep reds, burnt oranges, and warm amber tones mottled across a smooth, high-polish surface. The color pattern is warm and complex — earthy without being dull, vivid without being loud. Photographed here on a brass display stand (stand not included).

WHAT WE KNOW
This specimen is presented as marble or red alabaster based on its visual characteristics; the material identification has not been independently laboratory verified. The color pattern — warm reds, oranges, and cream mottling — is consistent with a brecciated or iron-stained marble (metamorphosed limestone), where red and orange tones are typically produced by iron oxide (hematite or goethite) distributed through the calcium carbonate matrix. True alabaster is gypsum (CaSO₄·2H₂O) and is typically more translucent and soft (Mohs 2); marble is harder (Mohs 3–4) and less translucent. The visual appearance of this piece is more consistent with a dense, polished marble or limestone variant than with gypsum alabaster, but without testing the distinction cannot be confirmed. This specimen weighs 148g.

THE STORY
The warm reds and oranges in this egg are iron’s signature in a calcium carbonate host — hematite and goethite distributed through the stone during formation or subsequent fluid movement, staining the matrix in irregular clouds and veins that polishing brings forward. Marble has been carved and polished since antiquity; the egg form is one of the simplest and most satisfying shapes for a dense, heavy stone, because the weight distribution in the hand feels intentional in a way that rough or angular specimens don’t.
