WHAT WE KNOW
Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral (Cu₂CO₃(OH)₂) that forms in the oxidation zones of copper ore deposits, where copper-bearing solutions interact with carbonate minerals. Its intense, banded green coloration is produced by copper — the same element that turns a copper roof green with age. The characteristic banding and swirling patterns visible in polished malachite reflect the botryoidal (rounded, grape-like) and stalactitic growth habit of the mineral, with each band representing a period of mineral deposition. Malachite has been mined as a copper ore and ornamental stone since antiquity. This specimen weighs 58g. THE STORY
Malachite’s green is copper’s signature in oxidized form — the same chemistry that produces the green patina on copper statues, old coins, and weathered bronze. The Ural Mountains of Russia produced malachite in slabs large enough to clad the columns of Saint Isaac’s Cathedral in St. Petersburg — still one of the most dramatic deployments of a mineral in architectural history.
