THE FIND
A silver-plated toucan figurine designed by Gunnar Cyrén for Dansk — one of the most collectible pieces from his celebrated 1970s animal series. Clean Scandinavian form, functional as a paperweight, and immediately recognizable to mid-century design collectors.
WHAT WE KNOW
Gunnar Cyrén (1931–2013) was a Swedish designer and glassblower best known for his work with Orrefors, but his silver-plated animal figurines produced for Dansk in the 1970s have become highly sought-after collectibles in their own right. The toucan form is one of the most distinctive in the series — the bold beak and compact body translate exceptionally well into the minimalist silver-plate treatment. This piece functions as both a sculptural object and a desk paperweight. No felt base or original packaging included. Silver plate in good vintage condition; age-appropriate patina present.
THE STORY
Dansk was founded in 1954 with a mission to bring Scandinavian design sensibility to the American home market. Their collaborations with European designers — Cyrén among them — produced objects that sat at the intersection of function and sculpture. The animal series in particular captured something that pure utility couldn't: a sense of wit and warmth within a rigorous design language.
WHY WE CHOSE IT
Cyrén for Dansk pieces are genuinely collectible and increasingly hard to find in good condition. The toucan is one of the stronger forms in the series. This is a desk object with a real design pedigree.
