WHAT WE KNOW
Vesuvianite (also called idocrase) is a calcium aluminum magnesium silicate mineral (Ca₁₀(Mg,Fe)₂Al₄Si₉O₄₀(OH,F)₄) that forms in metamorphic and metasomatic environments — typically in skarns, where calcium-rich rocks such as limestone are altered by contact with igneous intrusions. The green color is produced by chromium or iron impurities in the crystal structure. It was first described from volcanic ejecta at Mount Vesuvius in 1795 by Abraham Gottlob Werner, which is how it got its name — though the majority of gem-quality vesuvianite comes from deposits in Canada, Pakistan, Russia, and California rather than from Vesuvius itself. THE STORY
Vesuvianite’s naming is a reminder of how early mineralogy worked: a mineral was often named after the first location where it was scientifically described, even if that location later turned out to be a minor occurrence of the mineral rather than a significant source. The gem-quality material that fills most collections today comes from considerably quieter geological settings — skarns in Quebec, the Pamir Mountains, and the California serpentinite belts.
