WHAT WE KNOW
Serpentine refers to a group of magnesium silicate minerals (primarily lizardite, antigorite, and chrysotile) that form through the metamorphic alteration of ultramafic rocks such as peridotite and dunite — a process called serpentinization. The characteristic green to yellow-green color is produced by iron and magnesium in the mineral structure. Serpentine is relatively soft (Mohs 3–4) and has a waxy to greasy luster. This specimen is presented as serpentine based on its appearance and characteristics. The material identification has not been independently laboratory verified. This specimen weighs 151g. ⚠️ Note: some serpentine group minerals (particularly chrysotile) are associated with asbestos. Polished and finished serpentine specimens are generally considered safe to handle, but avoid sanding, grinding, or cutting. Do not inhale dust.

THE STORY
Serpentinization is one of the more dramatic metamorphic processes in geology — ultramafic rocks from the deep mantle, brought to the surface by tectonic activity, react with water and are chemically transformed into serpentine minerals, releasing heat and hydrogen gas in the process. Serpentine landscapes (called serpentinite barrens) are ecologically distinctive because the chemistry of the soil is toxic to most plants, producing unusual, often endemic flora adapted to high magnesium and low calcium conditions. The smooth green of this polished egg is the surface expression of a deep-earth metamorphic history.

WHY WE CHOSE IT
The green color is consistent and the polish is clean. At 151g the egg form has real weight and presence in the hand. A grounding, tactile object with a geological story that goes considerably deeper than the surface suggests.
