WHAT WE KNOW
Rainbow fluorite is a trade name for multi-color banded fluorite (calcium fluoride, CaF₂) displaying three or more distinct color zones in a single specimen — typically combinations of purple, green, blue, yellow, and clear. The color banding reflects changes in trace element chemistry during crystal growth in hydrothermal vein deposits: each color zone represents a period of deposition under slightly different conditions. Polishing reveals the full color range and enhances the translucence of the material. “Unicorn stone” is an informal trade name for the same material. This specimen weighs 22g. THE STORY
Fluorite is the mineral that gave fluorescence its name — many specimens glow under ultraviolet light, a property first described in fluorite and named after it. Rainbow fluorite in particular often shows strong UV fluorescence, sometimes with different color zones fluorescing differently.
