WHAT WE KNOW
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz (silicon dioxide, SiO₂), with color produced by trace iron impurities and natural irradiation during crystal growth — the irradiation converts Fe³⁺ ions into color centers that absorb certain wavelengths of light, producing the characteristic violet. In cluster form, multiple crystal points develop together from a common base, preserving the individual faces and terminations created during growth.
