THE FIND
A cut and polished agate geode slice, 136g — soft cream to warm ivory concentric banding with a small dark druzy center cavity and natural rough exterior on the reverse. The banding is fine, even, and unusually quiet in palette — all the visual interest is in the geometry rather than the color. A window into a process that took longer than any of us have been alive.

WHAT WE KNOW
Agate is a banded variety of chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz) that forms within cavities in volcanic or sedimentary rock. Silica-rich groundwater percolates into the cavity over time, depositing thin concentric layers of chalcedony that build inward from the cavity walls. When a small void remains at the center — as in this specimen — it may be lined with druzy quartz crystals or remain open. Cutting and polishing reveals the cross-section of that layering process. The cream and ivory palette reflects a low iron content during formation. This specimen weighs 136g. Origin not confirmed.

THE STORY
It started as a hollow space inside a rock — a cavity that mineral-rich water found its way into, slowly, over a long time. Each pass left something behind: a thin layer of silica, deposited in bands, building from the outside in. The stone didn’t know it was making something. It was just doing what water and minerals do when given enough time and nowhere else to go. The cut reveals what accumulated. The dark center cavity is the void that remained — the space the banding never quite filled. This is what patience looks like in geological terms.

WHY WE CHOSE IT
The banding on this slice is fine and consistently layered, with the fortification pattern clearly following the outline of the original cavity. The cream and ivory palette is restrained — this is a piece for a display that values form and geology over color impact. At 136g the slice has real presence and stands on its natural edge. A strong architectural piece for a shelf or desk.
