WHAT WE KNOW
Howlite is a calcium borosilicate hydroxide mineral (Ca₂B₅SiO₉(OH)₅) that typically occurs in large chalky nodular formations in evaporite deposits. Its characteristic white to off-white color with gray to black veining is produced by the natural mineral structure — the veining reflects variations in the borate mineralogy and inclusions within the nodule. Howlite is frequently dyed in the trade to imitate turquoise or other stones; this specimen is natural, undyed. The specific origin of this piece is not confirmed. This specimen weighs 19g.

THE STORY
Howlite was first described in 1868 by the Nova Scotia geologist Henry How, who found it in gypsum mines — hence the name. It is a relatively soft mineral (3.5 on the Mohs scale) and highly porous, which is why it accepts dye so readily and why so much “turquoise” in the low-end market is actually dyed howlite. Natural howlite is a different proposition: the gray veining pattern is unique to each nodule, and the muted white palette is its own thing rather than an imitation of something else. The veining on this piece is fine, branching, and well-distributed — it reads differently depending on how you hold it.
