Banded Onyx Egg — Layered Chalcedony, Natural Banding, 194g — Field Find

THE FIND
A polished banded onyx egg, 194g — quiet bands of color moving through polished chalcedony, no obvious beginning or end to the pattern as the piece turns. A small study in layers, balance, and the passage of geological time. The smaller of two banded onyx eggs currently in the Found in the Field collection.

WHAT WE KNOW
Onyx is a variety of banded chalcedony — microcrystalline quartz — in which the banding runs parallel and straight (distinguishing it from agate, where banding can be curved or irregular). The banding develops through successive deposition of silica-rich mineral fluids in rock cavities, with each layer representing a depositional event. Color variation between bands reflects differences in mineral impurities or iron content in the fluid at each deposition. As noted for the companion piece: much commercial “onyx” in the mineral trade — particularly material sold as “Mexican onyx” or “Pakistani onyx” — is actually banded calcite or travertine rather than true chalcedony onyx. This specimen is presented as banded onyx chalcedony based on catalog identification; material identification has not been independently laboratory verified. This specimen weighs 194g.

THE STORY
The finder traced one band with a fingertip. Then another. How many layers are there? The stone offered no answer. Each band is a depositional event — a period when silica-rich fluid moved through the cavity and laid down another layer. Some things become strong not by remaining unchanged, but by adding one layer after another. The egg form cross-sections through those layers, turning a depositional sequence into a continuous surface with no beginning and no end.

WHY WE CHOSE IT
The banding is natural and clearly visible, and the polished finish brings the layers forward. At 194g it sits comfortably in the hand — a quieter, more compact presence than the larger companion egg. A composed geological display or desk object that rewards attention without demanding it.
