THE FIND
A polished petrified wood specimen, 86g — wood-like grain and patterning preserved within mineralized stone, revealed by polishing. The surface draws the eye inward. The closer you look, the more the suggestion of wood emerges. The object has changed completely, yet it still carries evidence of what it once was.

WHAT WE KNOW
Petrified wood forms when woody material is buried and mineral-rich fluids move through it over geological time, gradually replacing the organic material with silica (or other minerals) while preserving the cellular and ring structure of the original wood. The process is called permineralization. The result is a stone that carries the structural memory of a tree: grain, growth rings, bark texture, and cellular patterns can all be preserved in the mineral replacement. Polishing makes those preserved patterns especially visible, bringing out color variation and grain-like markings in the silica replacement material. The exact species, geological age, mineral composition, and original locality of this specimen have not been independently verified. Catalog ID: FITF-0003. This specimen weighs 86g.

THE STORY
The forest was quiet when the last leaf fell. No one was there to hear it. The wood sank into the earth, and water followed, carrying minerals into the buried material. Slowly, patiently, wood became stone — not all at once, never all at once — until there was no wood left, only stone wearing the memory of a tree. What remains is the echo: a polished surface that looks less like ordinary stone and more like a fragment of a vanished landscape. The past doesn’t always disappear. Sometimes it changes form.

WHY WE CHOSE IT
The grain and pattern preservation on this polished piece is clearly visible — the polished surface rewards close examination in a way a rough specimen doesn’t. At 86g it has real presence. A compelling piece for a natural history collection or a display that values geological deep time over conventional mineral aesthetics.
