WHAT WE KNOW
Agate is a banded variety of chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz) that commonly develops in cavities as silica-rich groundwater deposits successive layers over geological time. In a geode, the cavity becomes a site for repeated mineral growth: agate may form the banded walls while quartz crystals develop inward toward the open center. The banded walls record each depositional event; the crystal interior represents the final open space the banding never filled. THE STORY
For an unknown length of time, this stone sat unnoticed. Rain touched its surface. Snow covered it. Sun warmed it. And no one knew there was a room inside.
